X-ray diffraction image of lysozyme. Lysozyme is an enzyme which is found in nasal mucosa, egg white, plant latex and various animal tissues. The patterns of bright dots in the image are regions of high X-ray intensity, and are a result of the complex diffraction geometry of crystals of many biological molecules. These patterns give investigators data on the electron density of the crystal under study, and from this the molecular structure may be inferred. This image was made at the European Synchrotron Radiation Source (ESRF), Grenoble.
