A stunning geometric pattern. Ireland, UK: FROM PSYCHEDELIC patterns to a giant-sized pooch-portraits these are the best of sand art masterpieces to have popped-up on Irish beaches this summer. These incredible illusions, up to 165 feet long taking up to seven hours each were created by artist Manuel Froelich (53) on his local beach along the Copper Coast in creations take around four to seven hours to complete, meaning he has to time his artwork with the tides before they are all eventually swallowed by the waves. Manuel draws in the sand using an ordinary garden rake, a bamboo stick, some string and a measuring tape, creating incredibly intricate designs on a large scale. The drawings also take hours to prepare on paper, Manuel planning the geometric drawing out perfectly before he draws it in the sand. Manuel started his art creations in 2016, working near cliffs initially before climbing to take a picture. In 2019, he invested in a drone, allowing him to work on any beach and take pictures much easier, avoiding a steep climb. ?The fascination of shapes, patterns, sacred geometry or basic geometry in general, the sense of space, Celtic art, optical illusions- all this and more leads to my style of designs, and I love to place those as a contrast to the smoothness of nature,? said Manuel. ?I live right beside the sea and on one of many beach walks, I picked up a piece of driftwood and scribbled in the sand. ?Seeing the contrast that the more wet and therefore darker sand creates in comparison with the dry and bright sand on the surface gave me the idea to create something bigger with other tools. And this idea just Despite the waters washing away hours of work, Manuel is never sad to see them go. It provides him with a blank canvas on which he can create large-scale drawings. He captures all his drawings with a drone, the artwork living on in this way despite not appearing again in the sand. ?Most people ask me if I?m sad to see it go after a
