Solar magnetic plasma tornado, artwork. It is thought that these rotating (red arrows) magnetic structures play a role in carrying energy from the convection zone below the Sun's surface to its outer atmosphere. They consist of swirling solar plasma, reaching temperatures of millions of degrees Kelvin. Many thousands exist on the solar surface, each one around 1600 kilometres across.
