Anders and Lovell. US astronauts William 'Bill' Alison Anders (left, born 1933) and James 'Jim' Arthur Lovell (right, born 1928). Both made history as part of the Apollo 8 crew, the first humans to reach and orbit the Moon, doing so from 24 to 25 December 1968. Anders took the famous Earthrise photograph of the Earth seen over the Moon. Apollo 8 was Anders's only mission and Lovell's third. Lovell's fourth and last mission was as commander of Apollo 13 (April 1970) that suffered a near-fatal mishap on its way to the Moon before returning safely. Photographed in June 2011, at the Starmus Festival, the Canary Islands.
