Shirodhara - an ayurvedic application where warm medicated oil is poured over the head in a rhythmic stream, used to alleviate insomnia, skin disorders and headache - at Kalari Kovilakom. India's 5000 year old health discipline, Ayurveda is in the midst of a renaissance. Spurred on by the recent boom in spa tourism, ayurvedic applications can now be found almost everywhere; from a beach resort in Mexico to the shelves of the Body Shop. But it is in Kerala where the real renaissance is happening, a plethora of plush ayurvedic resorts catering for foreigners recently opening their doors. But offering short courses, and some cutting corners, purists feel these resorts are jeopardising ayurveda's authenticity. Recently opened, CGH Earth's new property, Kalari Kovilakom is the most authentic ayurvedic resort in Kerala. There is no alcohol, meat, sugar or caffeine; guests aren't allowed to wear shoes or any non-cotton material and have to check in for a minimum of two weeks, sticking to the principals of the health science.
