Henceit is as layers only that we must consider La; Bresse, andthat is where they do excel. The eggs are of fine size andweight, and I have had them running to seven to the pound, although, in justice to other breeds, I must tell you thatthe weight of the egg is largely governed by the way thebirds are fed. However, the pullets are rare good eggproducers when kept in an almost wild state, and they areso hardy that the roughest weather does not appear to putthem off it. They are small birds, and as chickens theynever appear in the raw stage, feathering up from theshell. They are certainly very quick growers and they. A FEW NOTES ON BREEDS 65 mature early. I have had cockerels crowing at nine weeks, and at such an age being well-sprung in headgear—a suresign of the laying qualities of the breed, and I have hadJanuary-hatched pullets laying in June of the sameyear. Spring-hatched pullets generally begin to layin early autumn and continue until the following spring, getting as near the 250-egg average as any fowls Ihave kept. Like Game fowls, there are two types of Langshan, but in this case the one is called the Croad and the otherthe Modern—at least, this latter is known simply as theLangshan. There is only one variety of the Croad, viz.,the Black, while of the other there are the Black, the Blue, and the White. The difference between the two types ispractically in the length of their legs, those of the so-calledModern being almost as long as the legs of the ModernGame. Some people prefer fowls resembling storks, andothers do not. Thats why we get the difference, I sup-pose. H
