Jewish women from Hungary who have been selected for forced labor at Auschwitz march toward their barracks after disinfection and headshaving. Jews in Hungary were fairly safe until Hitler, fearing that Hungary was seeking a deal with the allies, ordered the invasion of the country in March 1944. Between 15 May and 9 July 1944, over 434,000 Jews were deported on 147 trains, most of them to Auschwitz, where about 80 percent were gassed on arrival. The quick progress of the deportations was enabled by close cooperation between the Hungarian and German authorities.
