It proved to bea woolly-headed vulture (Lophogyps occipitalis), ofwhich it was the first specimen in my collection ofbirds of prey. The freed slave Atangana had remained behindwith me, and we mounted and rode after the ought to have rejoined it within a quarter of anhour, but half an hour elapsed and still there was nosign of it. An hour later we passed through a Shoavillage, whose inhabitants assured us that no caravanhad passed that way. Evidently we had lost our-selves, which was all the more unpleasant because Ihad absolutely nothing with me. My flask had beenemptied some time ago, and I had no notion in whichdirection Roder and the bearers were marching. The Shoas told us that in another hour we shouldreach a large village called Makari, so we went on. ^ 133. Old Musgum chief.
