Detailed Winter View Looking Up the River Torridge, Through Rolle Bridge With Watery Sky. Torrington.

This winter view of the River Torridge, taken from the historic Rothern Bridge, is looking up river with the modern Rolle Bridge. This location is close to the disused Great Torrington Station which is now being renovated by volunteers of the Tarka Railway. The Puffing Billy is the name given to the restaurant in the old station building. The car park is a popular staring point for people using the Tarka Trail. Looking up river the furthest bridge is Rolle Bridge which carries the main A386, opened in 1928, connecting Great Torrington with Bideford. The nearest, Rothern Bridge is much older dating from the 14th century. It is no longer used for traffic but provides access to fields and the River Torridge. The river Torridge starts its life on Woolley Moors between Bradworthy and Morwenstow. After completing a long loop, it meets the Taw at Appledore then flows out into the Bristol Channel. It is famous for its setting in ‘Tarka the Otter’ by Henry Williamson and more lately in ‘Flow’ a novel for young adults by John Insull. Access to the Tarka Trail is from Torrington Railway Station, where you can walk or cycle to Bideford and beyond or inland to Meeth along this disused railway line.
