As a result of the Dutch embargo on spinach seed, the price already has reached 25 cents per pound. The death of Otto Stumpp, of West Hoboken, N. J., is reported in the obit- uary column this week. Joseph W. Edmundson, manager of the California Seed Growers' Association, left Chicago Thanksgiving night for the east. Beet is one of the items that the cata- logue man may well think about. There are offers of stock that look tempting, but the non-warranty applies, strictly. The people who have been cherishing last year's valley pips as with the idea they might never get any more are be- ginning to indicate a willingness to let go. The market for bouquet green firmed up at Chicago at the opening of this week, due to wintry conditions. Some suppliers of bulk green are reported to have withdrawn all offers. The acreage of onion in the Santa Clara and San Juan valleys of California will be increased this season, bulbs being shipped in from the northwest and from Colorado for the purpose. The letters from European growers indicate rather more than the normal eagerness to book contract orders for seeds of 1916 crop. There seems to be no fear, either of labor shortage or in- terruption of business. The death of W. Atlee Burpee, al- though his illness was of many weeks' duration, has come as a shock to the trade, for he was probably as widely known as any man in the business. An account of his life and a group picture of the Burpee family appear in the obituary column of this issue. The cool weather of the last two weeks
