Foxglove. Historical illustration of the flowers of the foxglove plant (Digitalis purpurea). The leaves of this medicinal plant contain the toxin digitalin, which is a heart muscle stimulant. When consumed in large quantities they are extremely poisonous, causing disorganised pumping of the heart. However, in small quantities digitalin is used as a drug to treat heart failure, for example in cases of myocardial infarction (heart attack).
