The Chained Oak, Alton, Staffordshire
A local legend states that one night in 1821, The Earl of Shrewsbury was returning to his home at Alton Towers when an old man appeared in the road in front of his coach, begging for charity. The Earl cruelly dismissed him, so the old man placed a curse on the Earl, saying that for every branch on the nearby oak tree that fell, a member of the Earl’s family would die. During a storm that night a single branch from the tree broke and fell. Later that same night, a member of the Earl’s family died mysteriously. The next day, the Earl ordered his servants to chain every branch together to prevent other branches from falling.
