Palermo, Sicily, Italy - 23 September 2019 The Palatine Chapel (Cappella Palatina), is the royal chapel of the Norman kings of Sicily in Palermo, Sicily. Commissioned by Roger II of Sicily in 1132, it took eight years to build, and the stunning mosaics were only partially completed by 1143. Not surprisingly, its overall architectural style is similar to that of Sicily's other great Norman Churches - the Monreale and Palermo Cathedrals. Like these, its interior is dominated by glowing Byzantine-style mosaics of Christ. The intricately carved and Arabic- influenced Muqarnas ceiling is also spectacularly beautiful. Note, as in all Sicilian places of Christian worship, there is no charge or ticketing for entrance to this church.
