On the breaking out of the Civil War, he offered his services to the UnitedStates Government, and was commissioned second lieutenant, 2d United StatesArtillery, August 5, 1861, and was promoted 1st lieutenant September 27,1861. He served with his battery in California and en route to Washington,D. C, until December, 1861. He then served with Light battery D, 2d Ar-tillery in Franklins Division, 6th Ai-my Corps, Army of the Potomac, untilJuly 15,1863; was in command of his battery from August 5, 1862, until July18, 1863.
