Communal oven in the hamlet of Urval in the Dordogne region of France. The site of the oven dates back to feudal customs in the middle overlord of the area controlled not only the water mill where villagers were forced to mill their grain or buy from the overlord but also the ovens where their bread was baked. The villagers paid for both of these "services.". The communal oven at Urval (four banal) is a rare example of such an oven and of middle ages feudal life. The oven was in use up to the start of the French Revolution. It has been restored and is relit and used at an annual village festival on the second Sunday in August.
