ATLANTIC TVIH. of wciod at oiicc 50 cents a cord. So farso good; but it was not a success as acoal burner. It only paved the way tobetter things. . In 1855 i\Ir. Wni. ,\. Crocker, ofTaunton, and myself built at our own costand trouble, a passenger locomotive forburning coal on Mr. Dimpfels plan. Wewere very sanguine of its success, but thesubject was comparatively new. En-gineers and firemen were used to wood, and coal was black and dirty to handle, and there were a thousand prejudices tocontend with. We obtained leave to trysome experiments on the Worcester andWestern Railroad, as the locomotive wasthen in Massachusetts. Our second ex-periment there was with a very heavypassenger train loaded mostly with emi-grants bound for Kansas. We proceededsuccessfully for twenty or thirty miles, and began to think that the problem wassuccessfully demonstrated, when the en-gine began to lessen its speed. The pulsa-tions of life grew less and less
