Antonio in Padua the choir-gallery was to be built, and for thatpurpose Donatello was summoned in 1443. But, as in the Florence sacristy, this only became a field for theexercise of his sculptural power. The gallery became a shrine for his world io6 of figures. It is themore welcome, that hewas allowed to arrangea setting after his owntaste! He went to Padua,because he could relyupon employment andgood pay in this town,but he remained there— a full decade! — be-cause he found, per-haps quite unexpec-tedly, a soil, on whichhis boldest dreams assculptor could be rea-lized.
