Woman Playing Knucklebones at Tanagra

Knucklebones played with dice was a favorite sport among the ancient Greeks and later the Romans as well. This terra-cotta figurine of a woman playing the game was found burned upon the funeral pile of the deceased with whom it had been interred at Tanagra. Tanagra, a town in the eastern Greek region of Boeotia, was widely known in Hellenistic times for its delicate figurines.
