Margate Pier. Late 19th-century photochrom (photographic lithograph) of Margate Pier in Margate, Kent, England. This pier was built between 1853 and 1857. The pavilion and pier-head area were added as part of an extension built in the 1870s. The pier last over 100 years, before being destroyed in a storm in the 1970s. A paddle-steamer is at upper left, with sailing boats also seen. At lower left is a concession booth offering seaside visitors the chance to view the effects produced by an optical device called a camera obscura. This photochrom, dating from the 1890s, is from the Detroit Publishing Company.
