R., and as we have, for 13 yearspast, published a condensed accountof it—the trials, struggles and final tri-umph of the enterprise—it must suf-fice for this time to give a few facts andfigures, and then pass on to our reviewof the cities, towns and objects of in-terest along the road and in the coun-try adjacent. The first survey was forthe Cential, over the Sierra NevadaMountains, by Theo. D. Judah, in theSummer of 18(30, followed in 1861 by amore thorough one, when a passagewas discovered and declared feasible. In 18G2 Congress granted the Pacificrailroad charter, and the first groundwas broken for it by the Central, atSacramento, Cal., Feb. 22, 1863, twoyears and eight months before groundwas broken for the Union, at Omaha,. THE WAY WE ONCE WENT TO VIRGINIA CITY. 116 crofutts new overland tourist Neb, The followingwill show the num-ber of miles completed by the Centralduring each year: In 1863-4-5, 20 mileseach year; iii ISCfi, 30 miles; in 1867, 4Gmiles; in 1868, 364 miles; in 1869, 190imiles, making 690^ miles from Sacra-mento to Promontory, where the roadsmet, May 10, 1869. The whole length of the Pacific rail-road proper, from Omaha to Sacra-mento, is l,776i miles, of which theUnion built 1,085 and the Central 6904miles. By a subsequent arrangement,the Union relinquished 53 miles to theCentral, and in 69 the latter purchasedthe whole of the Western Pacific, fromSan Francisco to Sacramento, 137imiles in length, which gave the CentralPacific 882 miles of road, from Ogdento San Francisco, and made the en-tire line from
