Laparoscopy. View of surgeons using a laparoscope (lower left) during gall bladder surgery. A laparoscope is a type of endoscope, and is inserted into a patient to view internal organs. Here it is connected to a camera, and the view can be seen on the screen at far right. Laparoscopy removes the need to open the abdomen, reducing the risks of infection. Operations are carried out by small surgical tools which can be introduced into the body, and operated from outside it. The gall bladder must be removed if it is severely infected or cancerous. A normal life can be led after the operation.
