THE LAKE DISTRICT NATIONAL PARK Car and passenger ferry on Lake Windermere Lake District Cumbria

WINDERMERE'S popular car ferry is being taken out of service for five weeks to undergo a major service. Mallard, which operates using cables running under the water, will not run between April 20 and May 23 so its five-yearly overhaul can be carried out. A ferry will be provided from Bowness Bay for foot passengers, but motorists will have to make a lengthy detour around the lake via Newby Bridge. Mallard, which can carry up to 100 foot passengers and 18 cars, operates throughout the year between Ferry Nab at Bowness and Ferry House, Far Sawrey, helping to reduce congestion on roads around the lake
