In 1835 he leftColumbia to take the Chair of Chemistry, Min-eralogy and Geology in South Carolina College,where he remained thirteen years. \\hile in SouthCarolina he discovered a new and cheap methodof preparing gun-cotton, for which the Legislatureof that state presented him a service of silver. Hereturned to New York in 1848, engaging there inthe business of consulting chemist, in which capacityhe was employed by the Manhattan Gas Companyfrom 1854 until his death. In 1835, Dr. Ellet mar-ried Elizabeth Fries Lummis, who survived himnearly twenty years and is known as a prolific authorand contributor to the periodical literature of thatday. Dr. Ellet died in New York City, January 26, BIEN entered the Law School of Columbia, graduating asBachelor of Laws in 1874. He was admitted tothe New York Bar in that year, and has since con-tinued in active practice, botli in the State andFederal Courts. He is counsel for many large andimportant corporations in this antl other comitries ;has been chairman and commissioner of many im-portant condemnation proceedings for securingproperty for public purposes in the City of NewYork, and has been retained on one side or theother in very many of the principal litigations of thelast quarter century.
