At Dayton the concreteis cast in the ties at the yards, brought out and placed inposition and tamped up to line and grade on a stone ballastfoundation. Finally, as illustrated, concrete is grouted into carry the pavement and also to distribute the load on theballast. This method is the one recommended by the tiemanufacturer, as it is believed that it will give a smoothriding track and require the least time and trouble. The application of these ties at Lorain, Ohio, was madein April, 1913, by the Cleveland, Southwestern & ColumbusRailway. The installation comprised 600 twin ties in con-crete ballast for 1800 ft. of track, partly of 7-in., and partly of 9-in., 90-lb. girder rail. Tie rodswere used on the 9-in. girder rail only. The division in-cluding this installation has a twenty-minute service with35-ton cars. On this installation there are four steamrailroad crossings.
