Back muscles. Computer artwork showing the erector spinae muscles of the back. This group consists of three pairs of muscles on either side of the spine. The innermost muscles are the spinalis muscles, which attach to the spinous processes of the vertebrae. Outside of these are the longissimus muscles. Outermost are the iliocostalis muscles. The erector spinae are the strongest back muscles. They maintain good posture and stabilise the torso.
