A press portrait of Louis Paulan, (1883-1963) experimental flight enthusiast who won the Daily Mail (newspaper) London to Manchester flight prize of £10,000 in 1910. He was formerly a balloon pilot at St Cyr who experimented with model heavier than air flying machines then employed by the balloon manufacturer Édouard Surcouf as an engineer and test pilot engineer, working on the construction of the dirigible La Ville de Paris. His only opponent in the race was Englishman Claude Grahame-White who sportingly joined with Paulan to celebrate the winning flight at the Savoy Hotel in London.
