Population in 1880, 861. School census,1888, 339. Census, 1890, 1,031. John Waterman Okey, at one time chief-justice of the State, was bornnear Woodsfield, January 3, 1827. He was of joint English and Scotch-Irishstock, and some of it very long-lived. An inscription on the tombstone of hisgreat-grandmother at Woodsfield showed that she lived to the advanced age ofone hundred and three years. The only institution of learning he ever attendedwas the Monroe Academy. He studied law at Woodsfield ; became ProbateJudge and Judge of Common Pleas; in 1865 removed to Cincinnati, when, inconnection with Judge Gholson, he prepared Gholson & Okeys Digest of Ohio.
