The first colour photograph of Mars was taken in South Africa by the American astronomer EC Slipher of the Lowell Observatory, Arizona, USA. Slipher made three expeditions to South Africa between 1939 and 1956. Each filter colour was individually exposed and later assembled to achieve a real-colour photograph.
