Oesophageal cancer surgery. Image 28 of 28. Pathologist examining excised cancerous tissue from a patient with cancer of the oesophagus (gullet). The lower oesophagus, containing the cancerous tissue, was removed, and the upper oesophagus joined to the stomach. The removed tissue was dissected, pinned out on a cork board (as seen here) and examined. The ulcerated (red) areas on the inner lining confirm the diagnosis of cancer.
