‘But it’s like Camille at Argenteuil! Well then! Tomorrow we’ll come back and you will pose there.’ This is what Monet said to Suzanne Hoschedé when he saw her on the Ile aux Orties bank. The working session would prove tough for the model, as the demanding painter made her hold the pose for hours on end. In the decorative studies that were painted hastily from this pose, Monet reproduced the instantaneous quality of the view he had experienced. But most importantly, he depersonalized the figure depicted, removing any characteristic feature; he could then make it look like the Camille of the Argenteuil works. He captured the soft breeze and the plays on light and shade created by the parasol. One critic is said to have called these Studies of figures en plein air ‘Ascension’ and ‘Assumption’.
