Mr. Waller, whose apiary appears below, sends the following useful notes detailing his methods of working, which need no addition from us : — " At your request I have much pleasure in sending a few notes of my bee-keeping experience. Some eight years ago my brother-in-law went abroad, leaving his apiary behind intact. Having assisted him with his bee-work on several occasions I re- moved the hives to my own garden, deter- mined to manage them myself, as I con- sidered it would be a nice break in my occu- pation (that of a tailor and outfitter). Thus my business made me a dresser of men ; the ' Cowan ' type of roof, and was deter- mined to have everything interchangeable. Success resulted, and my hives are all of the same stamp. I make all my own hives, and also the small hives for holding nuclei as seen in front of the full-sized ones, for in the slack season I am also careful to thoroughly clean and paint my hives early in March, and about the middle of the same month I begin stimulating my stocks in order toi build them up ready for the honey- flow and forming nuclei. I also then select my two best stocks for rearing queens and drones respectively.
