ISTANBUL, Turkey / Türkiye — A statuette of 'modest' Aphrodite, dating to the 3rd century AD. It is a crude copy of the statue of Aphrodite known as the Medici Venus in Florence, Italy, which is itself a 1st century BC copy of the Aphrodite of Cnidus. The Istanbul Archaeology Museums, housed in three buildings in what was originally the gardens of the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, Turkey, holds over 1 million artifacts relating to Islamic art, historical archeology of the Middle East and Europe (as well as Turkey), and a building devoted to the ancient orient.
