The scientific name of the elephant-footed tor-toise from the Galapagos Islands, shown in thephotograph, is Tcstudo clcphantopus. It might. rHE TURTLES. be of interest to the young folks to know thatthese giant tortoises live to be several hundredyears old. One we have in the Zoo, about aslarge as the one the little girl is standing on, isprobably 250 years old or nearly as old as theVirginia town, the three hundredth anniversaryof the birth of which is being celebrated this these tortoises get very old their shellsoften crack and the earth gets in these cracks intowhich also drop seed. They often thus carry littlevegetable gardens around on their backs. One thatwe have, had at one time a small peach-tree grow-ing in a large crack about seven eighths of an inchacross. This little peach sprout was carefullyguarded and was thought to be a great a new keeper was hired whothought that the turtle needed a good cleaning up,and the first thing that he did was to grub out theweed that he found growing out of the turtlesback, and that he thought was certainly a dis-grace. Oftentimes races are run
