The Appian Way is one of the oldest and most historically important roads in Italy. The first main section was built in 312BC and was named after the censor Appius Claudius Caecus who it as a military road during the Samnite Wars. The road is made of stone and is no longer a main thoroughfare for is now a popular tourist attraction, tourists can either walk or hire bicycles to follow the road and view the historical monuments and ruins that line the road.
