Itwas therefore decided that Dr. Holub and his wife shouldpush on toward it, and obtain help there for the a toilsome journey of the required length, they learnedthat the Portuguese settlement was two days journey from theboundaries of the Marutse kingdom, and these boundarieswere still at an indefinite distance. Footsore and weary, theyretraced their steps, to find that the camp was even then beingattacked by the Mashukulumbe. They managed to reach theirparty, and Dr. Holubs first thought was how to save hisdiaries. Thirty-two precious volumes were in his hut, but ofthese he was able to save but Mrs. Holub. DR.
