The concept of town twinning, which developed after the Second World War, was intended to foster friendship and understanding between different cultures and between former foes as an act of peace and reconciliation, and to encourage trade and tourism. In 2012, NASA landed the "Curiosity" rover on Mars with the objective of reaching a geological feature named "Glenelg".
