'Archibald Campbell, Earl & Marquis of Argyle', (late 17th-early 18th century). Portrait of Archibald Campbell, Earl and Marquis of Argyll (1598-1661), Scottish statesman. The chief of Clan Campbell, Campbell was effectively the ruler of Scotland during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms between 1639 and 1651. He was the leader of the Covenanter movement that fought for Presbyterianism and Scottish interests generally in the English Civil War.
