FREIGHT PLATFORMS. 381 Freight Platforms. — At points where the freight sh«d is atone end of the station building, either as an extension or a sepa-rate building on the main line, it is impossible to unload car-loadfreight or heavy machinery. On this account it is sometimesnecessary to erect unloading platforms on the siding deliverytrack, where machinery or car-load freight can be handled. The platforms vary in width from 8 to 24 ft. or more, andshould not be less than a car length, or about 30 ft., with aramp at one end. Fig. 191.
