The system of astronomy commonly accepted by medieval scholars was that devised by Ptolemy, a second century mathematician. According to his theory, the earth existed motionless at the center of the universe while around it revolved 10 skies- one for each of the seven planets, the firmament, and two crystalline heavens. In the theological-astronomical diagram two angels are shown working the handles that turn the first revolving sky.
