Aeroplane. Claude Grahame-White piloting the Farman aircraft he used to make the first-ever night flight. The night flight was made over Britain during the London to Manchester air race in 1910, the same year as Grahame-White (1879- 1959) became the first British person to gain a certificate of proficiency in aviation. The Farman aircraft was designed in 1909 by the French engineer Henri Farman (1874-1958). It had two main wings (a biplane design) and was one of the most popular aircraft in Europe during 1909-11.
