Chicken mites (Demanyssus gallinae), interphase contrast light micrograph. The chicken mite is an ectoparsite with eight legs with claws at the tips for clinging to the host, and setae (hairs) all over its body. This mite feeds at night on the blood of chickens. They can cause anaemia and transmit diseases, which lowers egg production. Magnification: x60 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
