Hovereye drone firefighting use. Firefighters preparing a Hovereye drone to survey a fire. The firefighter at right is using a computer to monitor and control the drone. Drones are aerial vehicles that can be autonomous or remotely controlled, and are used for a wide range of surveillance purposes. This is a VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) drone that uses an electrically powered turbine propeller to hover and move through the air. It has an auto-pilot mode and an obstacle avoidance system. It can can relay sensor data to its operator. Hovereye was developed from 1999 by the French-based company Bertin Technologies, and has been operational since 2003.
