The Virgin, bearing a lily, the emblem of purity, is rep-resented according- to the artistic formula prescribed by theSpanish Church as an interpretation of Revelation xii, 1: Andthere appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothedwith the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her heada crown of twelve stars. The splendor of the sun radiatesbehind her figure, her feet are on the moon, and eleven starsencircle her. The twelfth, detached from her, hangs from abough a little to the right. It is, as the letters indicate, StellaMatittina, the Morning Star.
