This illustration, which dates to 1882, shows the Byzantine consul Flavius Felix in 428. He was a leading politician in the western Roman Empire, with its headquarters in the Byzantine Empire in Constantinople (present-day Turkey). He served under the emperors Valentinian III and Theodosius II. The consulate had been the highest elected office during the roman Republic and it became an appointed position during the Empire.
