Its origin sprang from nohasty and crude theories or generalizations, but from years of thedeepest scieutificlnvestigation and discussion as conducted amongthe members of the Hartford Polytechnic Club, which was organ-ized in The re^uUs of their labors bore fruit in 1866. and the. Iluil^r luspfcliun and Insurance Cnnipany was dnlychartered for the purpose of inspecting steam boilers, and insuringthe owners against loss or damage arising from the explosion of theboilers. The company did business for one year under the manage-ment of Mr. E. C. Roberts, pending 3Ir. J. M. Allens accepting thisresponsible post, and which he did in 1867, after severing othei- en-gagements. Under his presidency the company emerged from itsinfancy a strong and lusty youth, judiciously guided on the soundestprinciples, economically run, and in every way promoting its policy-holders* security and interests.
