One of Northern’s “new” bi-mode trains passes Balshaw Lane near Euxton on a test run from Blackpool to Wigan on a sunny winter’s morning
Cw 7399 769 450 5Z51 Balshaw Lane One of Northern’s “new” flexi units passes Balshaw Lane near Euxton between Preston and Wigan on The train is on a driver training run for these units, running here on diesel power, though it must have been hard work driving into the bright morning sunshine. These are electric multiple units that have been moved up from the south of the country and been reengineered with a diesel engine added to the electrical capability of the train. The plans are to use them along the Wigan to Southport line, running on the diesel engines until they get to Wigan or Bolton where they will be able to be powered from the overhead electric cables to run onto Manchester The service had left Wigan Springs Branch depot and travelled to Blackpool North and is now on its return journey to Wigan. The train had left Springs Branch at around , arrived in Blackpool at , returning from there at and passed Balshaw Lane at It ran under headcode or train reporting no 5Z51.
