Ballycurrin Lighthouse, a folly built around 1772, on the eastern shore of Lough Corrib, County Galway, Ireland

Lough Corrib is known for its many islands with numerous ecclesiastical ruins, castles and the only known lighthouse on a freshwater lake in the country. A unique and quite archaic structure, Ballycurrin Lighthouse built by Sir Henry Lynch around 1772 , lies on the eastern shore of the lake. The accepted story is that it was built because Sir Henry needed a marker to guide the Galway to Cong ferry to a nearby quay and get his provisions off. There's also another version that Henry's wife had it built so her husband could find his way home from the pub. Either way, lighting the warning fire required a climb up the primitive, cantilever stone steps running up the outside. Probably best performed when sober!
