Sergeant Francis E. Brownell
Sergeant Francis E. Brownell of the 11th New York Volunteers. On May 24, 1861, he killed James T. Jackson, who had assassinated Colonel Elmer Ellsworth (1837-1861), a lawyer and Lincoln's friend, and the first conspicuous casualty of the Civil War. This was the First Civil War deed to merit the Medal of Honor.
