Witness my hand, this. 44 A History of the Erection and Dedication of the Monument From this it is clear that Oglethorpes name was JamesEdward, and that he was born December 22, 1696, Without knowing of Mr. DeRennes efforts, Otis Ash-more, Corresponding Secretary of the Georgia Historical-Society, took the matter up with the Lord Bishop of Lon-don with a view of obtaining a correct copy of the recordof the births and baptisms of all the children of Sir Theophi-lus Oglethorpe, and with the Dean of Corpus Christi Col-lege, Oxford, to verify the date of Oglethorpes entranceinto that institution. This correspondence follows: Savannah, Ga-, Dec. 8, His Lordship, The Bishop of London, London, Sir: The state of Georgia, U. S. A., has just erected at Savan-nah a monument to the memory of General James EdwardOglethorpe, the founder of this colony in 1733, and the dateof his birth has become a matter of inquiry with us.
