Three old obsolete computer screens discarded as junk on the sidewalk behind an office building, waiting to be recycled. Companies continue to replace the old CRT screens with flat-screen models, which consume less energy and take up less space in offices. Abandoning office material in the street raises the enormous problem of hazardous waste management, since certain components in the display tubes contain noxious chemicals, and cannot go into landfills "as is". Unfortunately, much of this electronic waste ends up in poor countries, where the recycling process depends on cheap, unprotected labor. Health concerns are frequent.
